A Comparison of Wuthering Heights and Heart of Darkness Essay example -
A Comparison of Wuthering Heights and Heart of Darkness à Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights and Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness are two similar stories in the effect that they both have dual narrators and that the narrators of both are manipulated to tell stories of similar morals.à They differ, however, in the narrative frames, points of view, and some personality traits of the narrators. à The dual narrator arrangement of Wuthering Heights begins with Mr. Lockwood, the naive new tenant of Thrushcross Grange.à He seems to be quite the social person and goes to visit Heathcliff who is not so social and actually seems downright inhospitable.à Due to weather conditions at the time (which Lockwood was not wise to go out in) Lockwood becomes stranded at Wuthering Heights where he feels quite unwelcome.à While spending the night at Wuthering Heights, the curious Lockwood snoops through some books where he find things inscribed by Catherine.à He hears the voice of Catherine calling, and calls for help.à Heathcliff then runs after the girl who is not in fact a girl, but Catherine's ghost.à Heathcliff embraces this ghost and dies with her in his arms.à That pretty much sums up the narrative present and Lockwood's role as narrator.à Out of curiosity (Lockwood's most important personality trait), he asks Nelly Dean questions about Heathcliff and the girl.à At this point Nelly takes over the role of narrator and we shift into the narrative past. Nelly Dean is quite knowledgeable about Wuthering Heights and the events that transpired there; however, she is blunt and opinionated.à She does not fail to mention that he has taken a genuine interest in Heathcliff sinc... ...ts we learn about Heathcliff's character in the beginning of the story.à In Heart of Darkness we do not find out about Kurtz until the end.à In both stories, we depend greatly on the narrators to illustrate the significance of theirs lives.à While Nelly was opinionated, she was still able to illustrate the moral of the story as well as the more objective narrator, Marlow.à Heathcliff took possession of both the Grange and the Heights, but lost his true love, and Kurtz had fame, jewels, ivory and the gorgeous amazon woman, but not the love of his Intended.à The most important similarity, however, was held in common not only by the narrators but by the reader as well.à Without curiosity the story of Wuthering Heights would not have begun, Heart of Darkness would not have continued, and the reader would not have held interest in either one.

Article on Discipline Essay
Discipline is not only necessary but also vital for any civilized society, as a matter of fact, discipline and Nature are synonymous with each other and whenever anything happens, which defies or interrupts the usual in Nature, it becomes a calamity, and similarly life without discipline can become chaotic. The term ââ¬Ëdisciplineââ¬â¢ means any training intended to develop moral character or produce a particular pattern of behavior accepted by afferent institutions and society. Discipline is a way of life. It is vital in happing oneââ¬â¢s personality. According to one school of thought, there are here forms of discipline i.e. expressionistic, impressionistic and self- discipline. If-discipline is usually considered to be the best form of discipline here in the term ââ¬Ëdisciplineââ¬â¢ instead of standing as a rigid code of conduct obi strictly adhered to, denotes a process of normal growth and learning, of ways to monitor oneself. Self discipline is directly related t o the concept of freedom and motivation. If a child is motivated and given the freedom to choose, discipline becomes a natural way of life. In modern times, discipline is misunderstood and misinterpreted by some students as rigid and fixed set of rules enforced by others and to be followed without any questions being asked. They feel it is encroachment of their freedom and rights. Discipline is not a term which is limited to institutions like schools and colleges only. Neither is it a weapon or tool in the hands of adults to control the younger generation or in other words seeking unquestionable compliance. Discipline is neither suppression nor a means to assert oneââ¬â¢s authority rather it is intrinsic motivation in a person to control oneself, oneââ¬â¢s emotion, and desires and live in a uniform and orderly manner. That everything in this universe has to follow certain rules, the Sun rises in the Eastââ¬â¢ and sets in the West, come what may, the cycle of seasons also follows a pattern, Night follows, dusk which follows day and dawn, thus, we humans are also governed by rules and following the same is another term for discipline. In schools, discipline can be exercised through the medium of morning assembly, time table, uniform, break, activities, various competitions and talk shows. An example of discipline is also the happening of activities in t he school premises in a particular order, right from promptness in reaching the school, wearing the prescribed uniform, abiding with the school rules, attending classes etc.à etc. When one learns to conform to a particular set of rules he understands the importance and need to follow a particular pattern in life and how veering away from them can make life difficult and confusing, All successful people understand the importance of discipline in their lives and enjoy the fruits of success. An undisciplined person is prone to temptations and can easily fall prey to a lifestyle which could lead to his failure and doom. Discipline, thus! is inevitable as it gives direction to live life in a harmonious, and orderly way.

This essay looks at workplace citizenship and its essential components and critically argues the importance of teamwork, social responsibility and communication as important core values and skills to the NGO sector. Today the highly competitive and global marketplace is moving towards high performance, effective organizations that generate high degrees of employee job satisfaction. As a result a substantial amount of research and study has been conducted to determine the various factors that may contribute to an organisations overall performance and effectiveness. A key area of study has been in the area of organisational citizenship and its resultant behaviours, which initially grew out of Dennis Organââ¬â¢s musings into understanding the apparent non-relationship between job satisfaction and job performance (Organ, 1988). Over the last 30 years researchers have been studying organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) to determine the antecedents and motives to organisational citizenship, as there is considerable evidence that workplace citizenship, or organisational citizenship, when aggregated over time and people, makes a significant contribution to organizational effectiveness (Podaskoff, et al. 2000). According to Nemeth and Staw (1989), organizational citizenship can improve an organisations performance and gain it the competitive edge needed to not only be a market leader but also retain key personnel that are motivated to perform beyond their actual job requirements.Show MoreRelatedThe Importance Of Social Responsibility, Communication, And Teamwork1587 Words à |à 7 PagesThis essay will discuss the importance of social responsibility, communication, and teamwork in the workplace in particular as a nurse in the healthcare setting of general practice. Privacy Invasions, By Samuel Warren And Louis Brandeis
Privacy Invasions (Issues about Privacy) Every individual expresses their self selectively. When something is private, it is hard for them to share it to others, because it sanctioned them to not be invaded by other people especially when it comes to their personal life. This aspect of living is optional, because it depends on how people split or share it to others knowing that this could not affect their individuality especially their PRIVACY. Privacy is an ability of expressing selective information about self unto others. It is also a domain that gives boundary of what is considered private and personal. Most cultures, accepted the fact that individual possesses thisâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The concept of information privacy has become more noteworthy as more systems controlling more information appear. It may be sold to others for profit and be used for purposes sanctioned by the individual concerned. Privacy Law in many countries has had to become accustomed to changes in technology in order to undertake these issues and, to some point, maintain privacy rights. But the existing global privacy rights framework has also been censured as jumbled and unproductive. There are various theories about privacy and privacy control. The incursion pattern described privacy violation as antagonistic actions of a wrongdoer who causes unswerving harm to an individual. According to Daniel Solove, a law professor at George Washington University, a conceptualized view of privacy will not work because there is no one core element. There are many different, unified elements involved in privacy and privacy protection. People may often disregard the fact that certain fundamentals of privacy problems are due to the structure of privacy itself. He also states that people have to redefine the connection between privacy and businesses and the government. Partaking in certain privacy elements of the government and businesses should allow people to choose whether they want to be a part of certain

Puritan Essay Example For Students
Puritan Essay US History EssayDuring the seventeenth century, the Puritans landed in New England to form the Massachusetts Bay colony. John Winthrop, the first Governor of the colony, saw the place as a political and religious refuge. He described it as a city upon a hill. In England, the Puritans were not free to practice their faith and were persecuted by the Anglican Church. The Puritans wanted to create an ideal society where they could practice religion at will. These people risked everything just so they could freely practice their faith. Their sole purpose in settling in America was to sustain and practice their religion. The Massachusetts Bay colony was very different from their counterpart, Jamestown. Jamestown colonists consisted of mainly single men who came to the New World to merely make money. These money-hungry profiteers were interested in milking the land for cash crops and other sources of revenue. The Puritans, on the other hand, formed communities where they could closely practice their faith together. They had a big focus on families and community worship. The Puritans also created a government, which was based on the idea of the rule of the majority. The Jamestown colony was not interested in making communities. The Puritans priorities were centered on their religion and the teaching of it. This is clearly shown in their focus of education. The purpose of education to them was to teach the children religious and moral values. This would prove to be a very good way to. Every community of 50 families had a teacher and every community of 100 families had a school. The Puritans emphasis on religious education supports the fact that they had moralistic plans for the New World. The Jamestown colonists, however, were not as concerned with education.Although the Puritans came to the New World for religious freedom, they did not accept people whose religious beliefs differed from those of the Puritans in the community. Anne Hutchinson, a religious reformer, held meetings at her house to read the Bible to puritan men and women. John Winthrop thought that these meetings were an attack on the moral codes of the Puritan society. As a result, Hutchinson was banned from Boston in 1638. This event proved that the Puritans did not create the perfect model society they had hoped for. The Puritans came to the New World hoping to run away from the strict laws that the British put on them. They mostly achieved what they were looking for except for the fact that they put restriction on some of the laws.

Y2k Essays - Computing, Software, Software Bugs, COBOL,
Y2k I Understanding the Y2K problem A- Two-Digit year/Six-digit date coding But what is the meaning for two-digit year/Six-digit date coding? It is very simple, the two-digit year is the last numbers entered for the year. So if you want to put the year 1990 into some applications in the computer, you will enter the last two numbers 90 to the applications. Six-digit date coding is which In BIOS the date is written into six digits, two for day, two for month and two for year. By using the two digits for representing the year is the problem. It will cause in year 2000 a failure. The applications that require the user to enter the year routinely into two digits to reduce the keystrokes will fail to operate. So the computer will fail to append the correct century. For an example, If you want to enter a data which have the year 2000 and also have the year 1900. You will put 00 for year 2000 and 00 for year 1900. So the capability to differentiate between date in the twentieth century and date in the twenty-first century will fail. However, All programs that represent the day of week by calculating it with the year last two digits will print a wrong date. The dates in 1900s are not as in 2000s. For example, January 1, 2000, will be Saturday but January 1, 1900, was Monday. B- Programmer's reasons for making the problem a- Saving memory space in the computer. The computers have a small amount of memory available and the memory in bios is very expensive. b- They found that it is more easier to put two digits for the year than four digits And more easier to be print. c- Since they make it two numbers, They didn't think that year 2000 will come Because it was a long time for it. For that, A lot of programs were written in the traditional manner of using two digit years on the date. C- It is not the first time It is a shock to everyone to know that's this problem is not the first one. It is happened before. It made a major system balk at going from 1979 to 1980. II Programmable logic devices (PLD) By time, Logic devices or programmable logic devices (PLD) will stop working if it has date adjustment. But what are (PLD)? (PLD) are chips that are used to operate many devices, such as coffee maker, Security systems, Videos, Nuclear power, Phones, Mobiles, Transport, Communications, Nuclear industry, Banking and finance. These devices may be programmed by the Assembler programming language. But at first, you will ask why date adjustment is the problem? Because it must deals with the eight digit date and not six digit date only. So it must have eight digits to deal with year 2000. And to differentiate between year 2000 and 1900. No one now knows how many problems will be explored. Some problems are known like: - a- It will fail to operate. b- Report an incorrect day of the week if it thinks that's year 1900 but is not year 2000. But on other hand, PLD devices are used in a large production systems like food processing, power plants and power company. Do you agree to stay in your home without electricity for some days?. Companies must find out what problems will occur and find a solution for it before it happens. A- Credit cards Your credit card is expired. This is an example of what will be happened by the scanner that scan your credit card. The program that checks your credit card will say that today greater than the expiration date. Thus, 01/01/99 is greater than 01/01/00, which would result in your credit card being rejected. B- Security systems However, If you have a security system, It will checks to see if today is s valid date before recording an exit or an entry from a building. If the 00 date is determined to be out of range or the computation is at fault the system may simply shut down and lock all the doors. III Operating systems and software ability to year 2000 A- Apple Macintosh If you have Mac OS or apple Macintosh computer don't worry. It does not have any error and can pass year 2000.
